Swachh Bharat Abhiyan | Swachh Pakhwada
Cleanliness is one of the core concerns of a vastly populated country like India. Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is an initiative started by the government of India to make the country completely clean of any mess or littering, thereby making every nook and corner of the nation clean and tidy.
It’s been more than 67 years now since we have got independence as a nation and we are still thriving hard to maintain a minimum level of cleanliness and sanitation in our locality and vicinity. During such times, drives like Swachh Bharat Abhiyan become quite relevant. The mission, which has been started by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2015 is said to be concluded in the year 2016, exactly in the year when the birth of Bapu Mahatma Gandhi turns 150 years and 5 years from the start of the campaign. The Swachh Bharat campaign urges all citizens of India to at least devote 100 hours of their time from
a year for cleanliness of their locality, offices, schools and vicinities.
What is Swachh Bharat Abhiyan?
Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is a movement started by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and central government which aims at cleaning the waste and dirt around our schools, offices, and homes through voluntary service by all the countrymen. The campaign would be carried out nationwide in more than 4,000 districts/towns in India and the mass movement would go on until the year 2019. On our Father of Nation, Mahatma Gandhi’s 145 birth anniversary, i.e. 02 October 2014, the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan was initiated by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and it would conclude on Mahatma Gandhi’s 150 birth anniversary, i.e. 02 October 2019. The date of the campaign has been chosen while giving respect to the father of the nation because he has been the pioneer of sanitation movements in not only his own country but in the entire worlds, and there could be no better personality to associate this project with.
The relevance of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan
Swachh Bharat Abhiyan should keep running in India, not just for five years but as long as the goal of cleanliness and sanitation is not achieved in every corner of the country. People themselves should play an active role in creating a living that has social, mental, physical and intellectual well-being.
The real development of any country can only be actualized when there are proper sanitation and healthy atmosphere and for that, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is a must do in the overpopulated country like India. Following are some of the key reasons why Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is so relevant in India:
There are a lot of open defecations in every part of India that creates lethal diseases in the vicinity. Open defections should be taken care of and toilet facility should be made available for everyone. There are toilets almost everywhere in India now, if not literally, however, most of them are unsanitary toilets. It is important that each and every toilet in India should be made a flushing toilet.
There is a lot of manual scavenging system in most part of the country. That should beThat should be immediately stopped if we want to have clean and healthy vicinity. In most parts of the country, waste management is done in outdated traditional ways and that is hazardous to everyone living around. Proper waste management is the need of the day, including recycling of solid waste, reuse, and hygienic disposal through scientific processes. Personal hygiene is a matter of behavior and that could not be imposed on anyone.
A sense of cleanliness and sanitation should be inculcated within the minds of each Indian so that sanitation should be taken care of at the grassroots level. Insanitation is a bigger problem in rural areas where people have been leading a tradition life since ages and not much modern living is penetrated in their lives. If sanitation has to be made a reality, the message should reach those living in rural areas to use proper sanitation mechanism and maintain clean vicinity.
Sanitation and cleanliness should not only be left to the government and the people. That would bring the lack of initiative at both ends. To meet the deliverables for sanitation, private party participation is also important, which jumps into the system with the latest technology and implement the sanitary renaissance effectively.
Last but not the least; people participation has to come in with pre¬set mechanisms like Panchayati Raj and other local communities. Only this way would ensure that sanitation is not left with the government only and is a people’s responsibility altogether. Swachh Bharat Abhiyan in Urban Areas Sanitation and cleanliness is much more important in urban areas since the per capita land area used by people is quite low as considered to the rural areas. Moreover, the resources are limited and hence
it is important that proper environment is maintained through adequate waste management. There is more than a crore of households who are living in urban areas. Swachh Bharat Abhiyan aims to improve the areas where there are slums and proper waste management is not in place. There are places in urban establishments like slums where individual toilets for each household are not possible due to lack of physical space. In such places in the cities and towns, community toilets would be developed and maintained efficiently.
If these places lack basic toilet facilities or are not maintained regularly, it results in a lot of mess around and that further aggravates the rotting process. The cost of the entire program in urban areas would be somewhere close to Rs 10,000 crores and that would include funds spent on solid waste management technology, community toilets, public awareness campaigns and individual household toilet facilities. All these programs designed under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan are supposed to ensure that there are no open defections and manual scavenging along with a behavioral change in the mindset of the local populace.
Swachh Bharat Abhiyan in Villages The Gramin Swachh Bharat Abhiyan would encompass all the rural areas of the country and ensure that proper sanitation and waste management is in action in all these areas. The earlier governments too have tried to exercise similar sanitation drives like TotalSanitation Campaign (Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan), however, not much success has been seeing by the earlier projects.
One of the core reasons for non¬success of Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan by previous governments could be red¬tapism and lack of public awareness and initiative. This time, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is expected to spend more fund and energy on creating awareness in rural India about sanitation and healthy lifestyle and indulge the local populace and Panchayati Raj for best results.
One of the core sanitation problems of rural areas is open defecations. In villages, ponds and water bodies are found everywhere. Thus, people living there find it convenient to connect their toilets with these open water bodies (flowing or still) and this creates the biggest pollution in those areas. There is no solid waste management mechanism in these areas.
The initiative has to be taken from all the parties and levels at the same time. The people living in rural areas along with government and Panchayati Raj bodies have to work in the tendon to make Swachh Bharat Abhiyan a reality. Merely allocating funds to this campaign would bring no results until the levels at government offices dealing in this campaign and the people as well are equally involved to make this a reality.
The Swachh Bharat Campaign would ensure that the people’s representation at the grass root level, i.e. Panchayati Raj at village, block, and district level are taken into the loop for effective management of the project. This way, we can sum up that the following are the broad missions and objectives of Gramin Swachh Bharat Abhiyan:To ensure that people living in rural areas enjoy a healthy and arranged life.
To educate people and consequently motivate them to keep their surroundings clean and help each other to maintain proper sanitation system in the entire village. The core objective of Gramin Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is to create proper awareness among people and bring them into the mainstream management of the cleanliness drive. An advanced environmental sanitation system is something that is not only missing in rural areas in India but also in bigger cities.
The Gramin Swachh Bharat Abhiyan aims to bring these modern and effective sanitation technologies in each city, town and a village of the country. Any process has to be selfsustained in order to reach a point of success. The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan aims to facilitate ecologically safer sanitation mechanism in rural areas of the country.
Swachh Bharat Abhiyan at Schools and Colleges levels As it is rightly said that if you want to build a good nation, you should start investing in its children and younger population. The same holds true for a thisparticular mission as well. If sanitation has to be maintained through proper education and motivation, it could be no other better place than schools and colleges.
That are the places where we are building the future citizens of the country and if they are committed and motivated for a clean and better nation, the battle against in sanitation would automatically be won. The campaign in schools and colleges started right from the very moment the campaign was launched formally. During the months of September and October 2014, the government had already run informative and involving campaign in all the Kendriya Vidyalayas and Navodaya Vidyalayas across the nation. In these schools, the volunteers and officials of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan not only educated children about the importance and ways of cleanliness and healthy lifestyle but also got them involved at a local level. This, we should say has been one of the core curricula of the students studying in these schools.
The children, young and motivated, have taken an initiative in almost all the part of the country for Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and have been the front runners of the drive. They are the populace who have actually made the difference and carried out the campaign in their schools, at their homes, in the vicinity and public places. The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, which has started in 2014, would be concluding in the year 2019 at the 150 anniversary of the father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi. This would be the time when we can expect the cleaner and healthier India.
To make this a success, every national and local leader and government official has been coming forward and make a difference altogether. Last but not the least, if we somehow do not see any changes in our sanitation system and in our vicinity after all these efforts being taken by government and non¬government organization, we should accept the fact that we as citizen have failed and not the government.
Cleanliness is more of a habit than a responsibility of anyone. Swachh Pakhwada Well, now that we are completely aware of the Swachh Bharat mission of the central government, here we are going to present you with another branch of the same initiative known as the Swachh Pakhwada. The staff members voluntarily agreed to the participate within this effort to clean the premises clean. They have devoted more than 6 hours a week for the cleaning of the school premises.
There was the special focus on the garbage deposition from burning. The dry grass and related materials were used as the green manure for the compost. An elocution Competition For disseminating the Swachh Mission, even more, an elocution competition was carried among the staff members and research scholars. And the topic for elocution was “Our environment our hygiene” and prizes were also presented.
Plantation program with school children There were also the initiatives under the Swachh Pakhwada mission to plant the few fruit tree saplings within the periphery of a school playground. The best part of this mission was despite the summer vacations, the school students and teachers took out their time and showed a lot of interest to participate in this initiative.
The farm committee and also the student’s body planted a lot of fruit trees like guava, amla, sugar apple and custard apple. The students were made aware of the importance of cleanliness and Swachh Bharat mission. What does the new companies law state?
